David Hunter and his wife passed away, leaving their only daughter, Willow, an orphan. She was taken in by her uncle's family in the rural countryside, where daughters are undervalued. Her aunt saw Willow as a burden, neglecting her and overburdening her with work, considering the girl a drain on the family's resources. When Willow learned she was to be sent away, she sought solace at her father's grave.
