Separated from her birth mother, Julie Scott is raised by devoted foster parents, Will Scott and Kelly Johnson, who sacrifice everything to keep her in school despite crushing poverty. Determined to honor them, Julie excels academically. On the eve of her college entrance exam, ruthless creditor Mr. Miller threatens to take her unless their debts are paid. To protect her, Will risks his life in a dragon boat race for prize money, only to die from a heart attack, his final wish to keep his death secret until Julie's exam is over.
