After returning to their home country, Kate's family was hit by a car in a hit-and-run driven by Michael's brother and sister, who fled the scene. Kate had no choice but to sign a pardon letter. Her sister-in-law, Rachel Lee, refused to pay for surgery, causing Kate's husband to pass away. When Kate returned home with her husband's ashes, she was misunderstood and beaten by Rachel.
